Seminar Series on Mass Higher Education in UK and International Contexts
This seminar series consists of six seminars structured around a number of key themes. These are designed to bring together members of the research, policy and practice communities, and contribute to developing critical analyses of mass higher education which could inform policy and practice in the United Kingdom (and beyond). The development of distinctive ‘national’ systems within the UK, the establishment of a ‘European Higher Education Area’ (the so-called Bologna process) and the impact of globalisation all create a context in which such a review would be well-timed.
The seminars are based around a number of papers prepared by internationally recognised contributors. An invited group of participants of around 25-30 attends each seminar. The seminars are held under Chatham House rules, and a report will be prepared and circulated shortly after each event.
The series will cover the following topics.
- Seminar 1 Higher Education, the Economy, Labour Markets
- Seminar 2 Funding of Higher Education
- Seminar 3 Students and Mass Systems of Higher Education
- Seminar 4 Supporting and Developing Research and Knowledge Transfer
- Seminar 5 The Changing Nature of HE Institutions, HE Systems and their Governance
- Seminar 6 Higher education in the UK in a global and European context: key emerging themes
It is being organised by the Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning in conjunction with Kingston University, University of Sheffield and University of Edinburgh.
The seminar series has been funded by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skill, Higher Education Funding Council for Education, Scottish Government and Scottish Funding Council. This has enabled us to cover free attendance, economy class travel, accommodation and subsistence costs for participants.
